The Mudd Library is pleased to announce that the final two series of the (ACLU) records have been processed, and that the entire colÂlecÂtion has been addressed is now availÂable to the pubÂlic. These mateÂriÂals join ACLU records long held at the Mudd Library: and . As a whole, this colÂlecÂtion docÂuÂments the civil libÂerÂties organization’s work in areas includÂing civil rights, chilÂdren and women’s rights, freeÂdom of speech (and all First AmendÂment quesÂtions), due process, the right to priÂvacy, and church-state sepÂaÂraÂtion issues, and this third subÂgroup covÂers the years between 1975 and 2000 preÂdomÂiÂnantly. The records are of vital hisÂtorÂiÂcal and culÂtural imporÂtance to the nation, and we are grateÂful that the work on these records was .
Founded in 1920, the ACLU’s misÂsion is “to defend and preÂserve the indiÂvidÂual rights and libÂerÂties guarÂanÂteed to every perÂson in this counÂtry by the ConÂstiÂtuÂtion and laws of the United States.” The group has been inteÂgral in myrÂiad landÂmark court cases since its incepÂtion, and the colÂlecÂtion of new mateÂriÂals housed at Mudd conÂsists, notably, of records from the ReproÂducÂtive FreeÂdom Project, the Women’s Rights Project, the Robert Bork Supreme Court nomÂiÂnaÂtion hearÂings, the Iran-Contra affair, and Texas v. JohnÂson (the 1990 flag-burning case). The newly availÂable records also include over 300 boxes from the ACLU’s , which hanÂdled many imporÂtant civil rights cases
AdriÂane HanÂson, who manÂaged the proÂcessÂing of the new ACLU mateÂriÂals, began in June 2010, and with the help of sevÂeral PrinceÂton stuÂdents, she invenÂtoÂried and processed 2,500 linÂear, in Mudd Library’s hisÂtory. Mudd Library’s entire ACLU colÂlecÂtion, which is its largest and most used, now spans about 4,200 linÂear feet.
